House Removals in Gateshead

House removals and man & van in Gateshead — our own crew, our own vans, and a fixed price before anyone lifts anything.

Durham-based, trading since 2008Gateshead moves every weekFixed prices from £210

Gateshead is about fifteen miles north of our Durham base. Two roads get a loaded Luton there: the A1(M) up to the Coal House junction and onto the western bypass, or the old Great North Road. The A167 through Chester-le-Street and Birtley, arriving as Durham Road and running the length of Low Fell into town. Which one we use depends on the hour, and on whether your move stops in Gateshead or carries on over the river.

That second question shapes more Gateshead jobs than the box count does. This is a borough people cross to get somewhere else, and every crossing is currently either under work or under charge.

A two-bed local move is £370, agreed in writing before the day. We are Durham-based, trading since 2008, and nothing is added to the figure at the end.

Crossing the Tyne on a moving day

The Tyne Bridge is the constraint everything else works around. It has been down to one lane each way since April 2024. Scaffolding goes onto the deck this autumn to build a protection layer over the carriageway, the main arch is next in 2027, and the restoration is due to finish in summer 2028. For a move crossing the river we either load early or take the Redheugh, which is usually the quicker answer regardless.

Most of Gateshead never enters the Clean Air Zone. It sits mainly on the Newcastle bank. The city centre and the bridge approaches, reaching only as far as the south landings on our side. Bensham, Low Fell, Felling and Whickham are all outside it. Cars and motorcycles pay nothing anywhere in it. A non-compliant van or light goods vehicle is £12.50 a day; buses, coaches and HGVs are £50.

None of that reaches your invoice. Your quote is fixed before the day, so a zone charge on a Gateshead-to-Jesmond run is ours to carry.

The staircase between the two front doors

The Tyneside flat started here. William Affleck built the first of them on the Shipcote estate in 1866 and named the streets after cathedral cities — Peterborough, Worcester, Chichester, Lichfield, Ely. Two front doors side by side on the pavement, one of them opening straight onto a staircase. By 1911 that pattern was reckoned to account for around 60% of the borough's housing, and it still decides half the quotes we write here.

The staircase is the priced part. A flight with no lift is charged at both ends of the move, by the size of the home, so upstairs to upstairs on a two-bed is £130 on the job. It goes on the written quote rather than surfacing on the morning.

Tell us if the stairs turn tightly near the top. That is what decides whether a double wardrobe travels whole or comes apart first, and dismantling is charged separately. Those figures, and everything else, sit on the full price list.

Where the van actually stands

Staiths South Bank at Dunston is a homezone: 635 homes on shared surfaces, one parking space per household by design and a quarter as many again for visitors. Good to live on, awkward to move out of, because there is no kerb to reverse onto and the visitor bays go early. We plan those as a shuttle with a longer walk.

The lanes behind Bensham and Saltwell were cut for coal carts. Bins now stand down both sides of most of them and several are gated at one end, so on a lot of those streets the van works from the front and the crew walk it. The fixed quote absorbs that. What it changes is the shape of the day, which is why we want a street name when you ring.

Bensham Court on Bensham Road is sixteen storeys and went up in 1963. In a block like that the lift is the entire plan. If yours needs booking, get it booked before you fix a date with us.

Then there is the climb. Gateshead rises hard from the river to Sheriff Hill, Windy Nook and Wrekenton, and terraces up there often sit above the pavement, with steps to the front door before the internal stairs begin.

Booking it, and picking the day

Booking online takes a couple of minutes. You give us the addresses, the property size and a date, we send a fixed written quote, and a 30% deposit holds the slot and comes off the final bill. Blankets and straps come with the van, and the crew are ours, so the people who priced the job are the people at your door. Call 0191 743 2754 or WhatsApp 07575 566760 if you would rather talk it through first.

The day you pick moves the number more than people expect. Friday, Saturday and month-end carry an uplift on the labour, Sundays and bank holidays more again, and the percentages are on the prices page. A midweek date mid-month is the cheapest way to move in Gateshead.

Timing within the day is local too. Team Valley has around 700 businesses and over 25,000 people working on it, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital sits up at Sheriff Hill, so Durham Road and the Team Valley approaches carry weight at shift changes. Felling, Pelaw and Heworth are on the Metro, and people who moved in without a car tend to underestimate the distance from a legal parking spot to their own front door.

Getting a van to your door in Gateshead

  • Staiths South Bank, Dunston635 homes on shared surfaces with one allocated space each and no kerb to reverse a Luton onto; the visitor bays fill early, so the job runs as a shuttle with a longer walk.
  • Coatsworth Road and Saltwell RoadBusy shopping frontages with tight kerbside space and active enforcement. Loading here wants a slot either side of the mid-morning trade rather than the middle of it.
  • Gateshead High Street and the InterchangeA bus lane took the northbound carriageway from 6 May 2026 and the pedestrian and cycle links down to the Quays keep being reworked, so town-centre loading is planned in advance.
  • Bensham Court, Bensham RoadSixteen storeys from 1963 with a lift that has to be shared and a service route that is not the main entrance; the lift booking, not the van, sets the start time.
  • Sheriff Hill, Windy Nook and WrekentonSteep banks where terraces sit above pavement level, so there are steps up to the front door before the internal staircase even starts.

When we are the wrong call

For a couple of items going a mile up Saltwell Road, an hourly local van will beat us on price. Our rates and our crew are built around whole-house moves, where the loading, the drive and the unloading all have to land inside one day.

Getting in and out of Gateshead

The A1 western bypass decides what time we set off. It runs the length of Gateshead's western edge past the Metrocentre and the Coal House junction, and on a weekday morning it will cost a long run more time than the next hundred miles do. Anything heading south loads early, drops onto the A1(M) below Birtley and stays on it to Scotch Corner. West, it is the A69 out through Blaydon. North, either the A1 past Newcastle or the A19 and the Tyne Tunnel, tolled at £2.60 for a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes and £5.20 above that. Long-distance jobs are quoted as one fixed figure with the fuel already in it, so time lost on the bypass is not a number that grows on your bill.

Questions people in Gateshead ask

How does booking online actually work?

You give us the two addresses, the property size and a date, and you get a fixed written quote. The 30% deposit holds your slot and comes off the final bill, so it is not an extra on top. If there is something awkward in the job. An upright piano, a lift that needs booking, a lane the van cannot use. Put it in the notes or ring 0191 743 2754, and we price it before you commit rather than after.

Will the Clean Air Zone charge end up on my bill?

No. Your quote is fixed and agreed in writing before we start, so anything the zone charges is ours to deal with. Most Gateshead moves never enter it in any case: it covers Newcastle city centre and the bridge approaches and stops around the south landings on the Gateshead bank, leaving Bensham, Low Fell, Felling and Whickham outside. Cars and motorcycles are not charged at all, and a non-compliant van is £12.50 a day.

We are the upstairs half of a Tyneside flat. How does that get priced?

By the flight. Stairs are counted at both ends of the move where there is no lift, from £25 a flight on a one-bed to £105 on a four-bed, so upstairs to upstairs on a two-bed is £130 on the job, on the quote before the day. The thing worth telling us is whether the staircase turns sharply near the top. That is what decides if a double wardrobe goes up whole or comes apart first.

The van cannot get down our lane in Bensham. Does the longer carry cost more?

No. The quote is fixed, so a carry from the front street is already inside it. What a long carry changes is the length of the day, and on a three-bed that can be an hour or two. Much better built into the plan than found on the morning. Give us the street and the nearest cross street when you book and we will work it out from there.
