Get my price 0191 743 2754The move we do most in Peterlee is a two-bed social let changing hands inside the town. Tenancy ends on the Friday, keys to the next place the same morning, one van, the whole lot done by teatime. £370, fixed, written down before the van leaves Durham.
Peterlee was designated a new town in 1948. It was then built out estate by estate over twenty-five years, each phase under whichever design idea was current. The address tells a driver less here than it does anywhere else in East Durham. In Sunny Blunts the houses were deliberately turned round: front doors and gardens open onto footpaths and greens, back doors face the road. The door on your letters is often the wrong one to load through.
So give us the estate when you ring, along with the postcode. We work out of Durham, twelve miles up the A19, with our own employed crew and eighteen years behind us. There is no depot in Peterlee. Which is why we ask about the door instead of assuming it.
Which door the van comes to
Sunny Blunts went up between 1967 and 1970 on the Skarne system, prefabricated concrete panels bolted together, roads curving to follow the valley instead of running straight. The rotated houses catch removal firms out. Your front door can open onto grass with a footpath past it, and the nearest legal stop for a 3.5-tonne Luton seventy metres away. Every box walks that.
We have turned up on the wrong side of a Sunny Blunts house before now, and Street View is no help either, because the bollards and the parking bays have moved on several of those greens since the camera car went round. So we ask. If nobody at your end is certain which side a van can reach, we come and look before we quote.
Standing in the middle of that estate is the Apollo Pavilion, Victor Pasmore's concrete structure over the lake, opened in 1969 and listed Grade II* in 2011. It has nothing to do with your move. It is part of why the footpaths there run where they do.
Elsewhere the problem changes shape. Howletch has shared parking courts rather than driveways, and a Luton clears the entrance right up until two neighbours park badly. Thorntree Gill dates from 1951, Acre Rigg from five phases between 1956 and 1966. Those are the oldest parts of town. 1950s carriageway widths, garages grouped in blocks well away from the front doors. Oakerside Park and Woodhouse Park are later private detached and bungalow stock on cul-de-sacs, where the awkward bit is reversing out again.
One day, two sets of keys
A large share of moves here are social lets. County Durham Housing Group took on the council's 18,000 homes on 13 April 2015. The landlord across Easington, Peterlee and Seaham is believe housing now, with lettings through Durham Key Options. Those tenancies seldom overlap by more than a day. Sign for the new place in the morning, hand the old keys back before the office shuts, and everything happens between the two.
So we start early, which suits the other Peterlee pattern too. Caterpillar has built articulated dump trucks on the North West Industrial Estate for decades, with NSK and GT Group on the same estates, and shift patterns decide moving days round here as much as weekends do. A 07:30 start is normal. It is not charged as an extra.
Then there is the short hop. People come into Peterlee from the colliery terraces at Horden, Blackhall and Easington Colliery, where there is nothing off-street at either end of the row. Ten years later they go out to Seaham or Hartlepool. Same distance both ways, two completely different loading jobs.
The Dene makes short moves long
Castle Eden Dene cuts through the south of the town, a limestone ravine of about 477 acres and the largest area of semi-natural woodland in north-east England. Inside the reserve nothing crosses it but footbridges. The road network goes round: the A19 at the head, the A1086 coast road at the mouth. A house you could see across the valley can be a three-mile drive. Sat navs get that right. People pricing the job over the phone often do not.
The A19 runs down the western edge with the town's own junctions, B1320 Burnhope Way and the Passfield Way turn-off, and that is how most loads leave. The A179 drops to Hartlepool. There is no clean air zone here and nothing to pay to drive anywhere in East Durham. The nearest toll is the Tyne Tunnel. That only applies if your move crosses into North Tyneside, and it sits in the written quote rather than on the bill afterwards.

Yoden Way is pedestrianised, so a flat over the precinct gets loaded from wherever the servicing access allows, and that gets sorted before the day. There are four council car parks in the centre. Grampian Drive with 60 spaces, St Cuthbert's Way with 100, York Road with 30, Hearts of Oak with 15. None of them charges. None of them is a loading bay either.
What Peterlee has not got is permit-controlled kerbside. Durham County Council's controlled parking areas are North End, Chevallier Court, Gilesgate, Framwellgate Moor, Chester-le-Street and Bishop Auckland. Nothing here. Kerb space is first come, first served, which beats a permit zone on a Sunday and is worse than one at half eight on a Tuesday.
Prices are the same here as everywhere else we work. Fixed by property size for a full house move, hourly for anything smaller, with stairs, dismantling, packing and pianos priced per item on the full North East removal cost breakdown. Nothing gets added at the end. Blankets and straps come with the van, and the 30% deposit comes off the final bill.
Getting a van to your door in Peterlee
- Sunny BluntsHouses rotated 180 degrees, so the door you use every day opens onto a footpath and a green while the road side is the back. Get the wrong side and the carry is sixty or seventy metres across grass.
- HowletchShared parking courts instead of driveways. The entrance takes a Luton until two neighbours have parked badly, and then it takes nothing at all.
- Acre Rigg and Thorntree GillPeterlee's oldest streets, 1951 to 1966, at 1950s carriageway widths with the garages grouped in blocks well away from the front doors.
- Yoden Way and Castle DeneThe precinct is pedestrianised and the four town-centre car parks are parking, not loading. A standing spot for a flat above the shops has to be agreed in advance.
- Castle Eden DeneNo road bridge inside the reserve, so a load crossing it goes out to the A19 or down to the A1086 first. Half a mile on a map, three on the road.
When we are the wrong call
Do the arithmetic before you ring. Two men and a Luton are £70 an hour with a two-hour minimum. So the smallest bill we can write is £140. It stays £140 whether the work takes twenty minutes or the full two hours. A sofa bed going from Howletch to Acre Rigg is about three-quarters of a mile and forty minutes of carrying. Call it £3.50 a minute for watching two men lift something you could shift yourself with a hired van and a mate who owes you a favour. Book us when the sum comes out the other way. Three bedrooms of furniture, a handback time you cannot miss, and one working day to do both ends of it.
Getting in and out of Peterlee
Peterlee sits on the A19, so long work leaves easily. South for Teesside, York and the M62, north for the tunnel and Scotland, west to the A1(M) for the Midlands and London. The long-distance bands sit with the rest of the pricing. Same crew loads you here and unloads you at the other end. Read us both postcodes on 0191 743 2754, or send them to 07575 566760 on WhatsApp. Those runs go out at a single agreed figure. Traffic, fuel and the empty return are already inside it, so the number does not move on the day.
Questions people in Peterlee ask
Which side of the house do you load from in Sunny Blunts?
Whichever side a 3.5-tonne van can legally reach, and on those streets that is usually the road side, which is your back door. The front door opens onto a garden with a footpath and a green beyond it. Tell us which side has vehicle access when you book and the carry goes into the quote. If nobody at your end is sure, we will come and look before giving you a number.
Do I need a parking permit or a bay suspension in Peterlee?
No. Peterlee has no controlled parking area, so there is no permit to buy and no bay to suspend. Durham County Council's permit schemes are at North End, Chevallier Court, Gilesgate, Framwellgate Moor, Chester-le-Street and Bishop Auckland. On the tighter estates it is worth asking a neighbour to leave a gap the night before, and we ring on the morning to find out what we are working with.
My tenancy ends the same day the new one starts. Is that enough time?
For a two-bed inside Peterlee, comfortably. Durham Key Options lettings rarely give you an overlap, so we start early, load in one go and have the old place emptied before the keys are due back. Give us the handback deadline when you book rather than on the day. It changes what time we set off from Durham, not what you pay.
Why does a move across Castle Eden Dene take so long?
Because the van has to drive round it. There is no road bridge inside the reserve, so a load going from the Peterlee side to Blackhall or Castle Eden runs out to the A19 or down to the A1086 first. On a fixed-price move that detour is already in the figure. On an hourly job it is time you would rather not be paying for, which is one reason we ask for both addresses before quoting anything.
How do I book, and what do you want up front?
Book online with a 30% deposit that comes straight off the final bill, or phone 0191 743 2754 or WhatsApp 07575 566760 and talk it through first. Nothing is added on top of the agreed figure. Our Google rating is 5.0 from ten reviews, which is ten, and we would rather give you the number than call it excellent and leave you to guess.
