House Removals in Jarrow

House removals and man & van in Jarrow — our own crew, our own vans, and a fixed price before anyone lifts anything.

Durham-based, trading since 2008Jarrow moves every weekFixed prices from £210

Jarrow's town centre is walked, not driven. Bede Precinct runs through the middle of the Viking Centre and takes pedestrians, so a flat above a shop in there loads from Napier Street or the ring of streets round the back, on a barrow. Since South Tyneside approved the demolition of the units on the Ellison Street corner on 29 April 2025, the old Wilko among them, a stretch of that frontage has been hoarding rather than kerb. What goes on the cleared ground has not been announced. We cannot tell you today where the nearest legal stop will be next spring, only that we will have walked it before your date.

We load out of Durham and have done since 2008. Jarrow is about half an hour up the A1(M) and the A194(M), the men on your job are on our payroll rather than a subcontractor's, and the number we write down is the number at the end.

Under the river, and what a crossing costs

The southern portal of the Tyne Tunnel is in Jarrow. The A19 drops under the river here and surfaces at Howdon, which puts Wallsend and North Shields nearer than a fair bit of Gateshead.

It is tolled both ways and there are no booths any more; the plate is read by camera and paid afterwards. A passage is £2.60 for a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes and £5.20 for anything over, with 10% off on a pre-paid account, so £2.34 and £4.68. A 3.5-tonne Luton sits right on the line between those two bands, which is ours to sort out rather than yours. When a job crosses the tunnel we count the passages, a two-load shuttle being four of them, and they go inside the written figure before you pay a deposit.

The Clean Air Zone does not reach Jarrow. The Tyneside scheme covers Newcastle and Gateshead, so it only enters a Jarrow job that ends in the middle of one of them, and we say so when we quote.

The tunnel approach and the A185 through the town both thicken from about half seven. An eight o'clock start means the loading happens while the queue is somebody else's.

What you pay, and the days everybody wants

A two-bedroom move inside Jarrow is £370, agreed in writing before anything is picked up. Other sizes, hourly work for part days, packing and the extras are all set out on the full price list, and it is the same list wherever the job is.

Two things move the figure here. Stairs are the first. A staircase with no lift beside it is charged by the flight, from £25 on a one-bed to £105 on a four-bed, counted at the pick-up and again at the drop, which bites in this town because so much of the older stock is an upper flat reached by its own stair.

The date is the second. Jarrow holds a lot of council and housing association property, and those tenancies conventionally run Monday to Sunday, so keys tend to change hands at the start of the week. Sale completions do the opposite and stack onto Fridays, worst on the last Friday of the month. Friday, Saturday and month-end carry an uplift on the labour, Sunday more again. A Tuesday mid-month costs less and hands you a kerb you can park on.

Nothing is added afterwards.

Stairs, lanes and the estates

Two kinds of house, roughly. Older terraced streets around Bede Burn Road, then the estate housing that spread south and east after the war.

The terraces bring the upper flat: its own street door, and its own stair going straight up behind it. Steep, usually boxed in near the head, and the reason a three-seater with fixed arms sometimes will not turn at the top. Feet and arms come off where they can. Where they cannot, we tell you when we quote rather than on the pavement at nine in the morning. Order more small boxes than you think you need. Everything coming down that stair wants to be liftable by one person.

Behind those streets run the back lanes. Some take a Luton. Some have a dropped apron, a gatepost and both sides in bins, and we would sooner find that out on foot the week before than with a loaded van halfway in. Where a lane fails we work off the front street and walk further, and the agreed number does not move because of it.

At Primrose and Monkton the semis and short terraces mostly have no drive, so the carry distance sets the day and the mileage does not. Fellgate and Hedworth came later and are laid out in closes, which a loaded Luton leaves the way it arrived. We reverse in on arrival. Fellgate got its own Metro station on 31 March 2002, and a good part of the estate commutes on it, so those streets are easier at eleven than at four.

Getting a van to your door in Jarrow

  • Bede Precinct and the Ellison Street corner of the Viking CentreA pedestrian precinct, so the nearest legal stop is Napier Street or the streets ringing the centre. Part of the Ellison Street frontage has been hoarding since the demolition approved on 29 April 2025, and a flat above a shop here loads on a barrow.
  • The older terraced streets off Bede Burn RoadUpper flats with a street door of their own and a steep stair immediately behind it. Big sofas and king divans come apart on the landing or they do not come down at all.
  • Fellgate and HedworthCloses rather than through roads, so a loaded 3.5-tonne Luton has to leave the way it came in. We reverse in when we arrive instead of discovering it at four o'clock with the van full.
  • The A19 tunnel approach at JarrowThe quickest crossing to North Tyneside by a distance, and a queue from about half seven. Jobs that cross it get an early start written into the plan rather than hoped for.

When we are the wrong call

A bed, a sofa and a dozen boxes going three streets across Primrose is a hire van and a Saturday afternoon. Ring us for the ones with a stair at one end, a kerb you cannot park at and a handover time somebody else set.

Getting in and out of Jarrow

Long runs out of Jarrow start on the A194 at Whitemare Pool, onto the A194(M) and straight down the A1(M), or on the A19 south if the load is heading for Teesside. Manchester is about 155 miles by road, Birmingham about 215, London about 285. Those go out as one fixed figure with the fuel already inside it, and the long-distance bands are on the price list. The crew that loads in Jarrow is the crew that unloads at the far end.

The men who left Jarrow Town Hall on 5 October 1936 took twenty-six days to reach London. The distance gets printed as 282 miles, 291 miles and 300 miles depending which account you read, and we have never worked out which of them is right. We do it inside a day.

Questions people in Jarrow ask

Does the Tyne Tunnel toll end up on my bill?

No. The toll is £2.60 a passage for a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes and £5.20 for anything heavier, charged in each direction, read by camera and paid after the crossing. A pre-paid account takes 10% off. When we price a move that crosses the tunnel we count the passages and put them inside the fixed figure, so the number you agreed is the number you pay. The Clean Air Zone does not come into it either: the Tyneside zone is Newcastle and Gateshead only, and Jarrow is in neither.

My flat is above a shop in the town centre. Can you get to the door?

Not to the door. The precinct is a walking route, so the van sits on Napier Street or the streets ringing the centre and the load comes out on a barrow. That is workable and we do it regularly; it just needs knowing in advance. Tell us the floor and your three biggest items when you ask for a price and the carry goes into the quote instead of turning up as a surprise on the day.

Our tenancy starts on a Monday but the sale completes on a Friday. Which is harder to book?

The Friday, and the last Friday of the month is the hardest date in the calendar. Fridays, Saturdays and month-end carry an uplift on the labour, Sundays more again. Monday handovers are easier to get, though keys on a council or housing association let often do not land before noon, so we build the day around a late start rather than sitting outside from eight. Ring 0191 743 2754 or WhatsApp 07575 566760 with your dates and we will tell you what is left.

Who turns up, and is anything added afterwards?

Our own employed crew. We do not pass Jarrow work to a subcontractor, so the people who quoted the stair are the people who carry the sofa down it. The written figure is the whole figure, and the 30% deposit taken when you book online comes off it rather than sitting on top. Google shows us at 5.0 from ten reviews, which is ten reviews, and we are not going to dress that up as more.
