Get my price 0191 743 2754The question that comes up on Whitley Bay calls and almost nowhere else is about the wind. It is a fair one. On the Esplanade and along The Links there is nothing between the tail lift and the North Sea, and a wardrobe door or a bare mattress catches it like a sail. Long items get strapped and blanketed on the lift rather than stood up on the pavement, and nothing gets left leaning against the van while somebody fetches the next thing.
Booking is the quiet end of the same job. Two minutes online, and a 30% deposit that comes off the final bill.
Great House Move has been going since 2008 and works from one base, in Durham. We are over on the coast side of the A19 most weeks of the year. The crew are ours and employed. Nobody turns up at your door who is not on our books.
Two minutes, and the box people leave blank
The form asks for postcodes, bedroom count and a date, and most people fill those in without thinking. Then it asks about access, and that is the box that gets skipped. It is also the only one that changes the number.
In Whitley Bay the answer is usually a staircase. The terraces between the Metro line and the sea are largely Tyneside flats, built from the 1870s through to 1914, with two front doors side by side and the upper flat's stairs running straight up behind its own. Narrow. A turn near the top. Nothing in the building designed round a three-seater. Say so at booking, and tell us your three biggest items, and the morning is planned before anyone arrives: feet and legs off the sofa, the flat door lifted off its hinges where that buys the inch, bed frames down in pieces rather than fought round the newel post.
Half the town is nothing like that. Whitley Lodge and the Monkseaton estates are interwar and post-war semis with a drive and a level run to the door, and the access box takes forty seconds. Cullercoats swings between the two inside a few hundred metres: fishermen's cottages on Simpson Street, Victorian terraces behind them, then cul-de-sac estates from the seventies and eighties with room to swing a Luton round.
What it costs, and the two things that move it
A fixed local two-bed is £370, which is the size that changes hands most often here. It is written down and agreed before anything is carried. Part-day work goes on the clock instead, two men and a Luton at £70 an hour on a two-hour minimum, and a one-bed flat going four streets rarely needs a full fixed-price job. One-man and three-man rates, day rates, packing, stairs, pianos and dismantling all sit on the full price list, which is the same list wherever we are working.
Nothing is added at the end. Nothing is added at the end.
Two things move a Whitley Bay figure. Flights of stairs at either end, which is what the access box is for. And the date: Friday, Saturday and month-end carry 15% on the labour, Sunday and bank holidays 20%. On a permit street, mid-week buys you a kerb as well as a cheaper day.

Get my priceWhere the van can legally stop
Almost none of the older housing has off-street parking, so the van takes the road outside and whatever the neighbours have left it. Two car lengths cleared the night before saves more time than anything else you can do for us.
Some streets need paperwork. North Tyneside runs residents' permit zones lettered WB and numbered; WB6 covers the Grosvenor Drive streets and WB7 the Esplanade. A permit works only inside its own zone, so a neighbour's spare from the next zone along is no use. Where there is no legal space, the council will suspend a bay for a domestic removal at £10 a day per bay, a standard bay being 5.5 metres, and it wants the application in at least five working days ahead. Apply, wait for approval, then pay. Ten pounds against sixty metres of pavement walked a hundred and fifty times is not a close call.
Park Road car park went to charged parking on 23 March 2026, 9am to 6pm every day. The Playhouse car park did not. That matters if you were leaving a second car somewhere all day while the van works.
The back lanes are the thing we get wrong. A satellite photo shows a clear run behind the terrace; the ground shows bins down both sides, a gatepost you cannot swing past and nowhere to reverse out. We have misjudged it more than once. Somebody walks the lane now before the van commits, and nine times in ten we load off the front anyway.
On the seafront the carry starts before the house does. The Links and the Esplanade sit back behind the promenade, a good thirty or forty metres of grass and paving before the first step. North Tyneside's seafront programme, upwards of £36m of public and private money since 2014, resurfaced the Northern Promenade and repaired the yellow-and-red Battenberg flagstones north of the Rendezvous café rather than tarmacking over the lot. Handsome, and kinder to a sack barrow than the broken ones were.
Picking the date
July and August are the squeeze. Families come out of the flats and into the Whitley Bay High and Monkseaton catchments across the school holidays, and they all want the same fortnight. Ask in April for an August Friday.
The rest of the year runs on the Metro. Four stations serve the town and Monument is about twenty-nine minutes away on the Yellow Line, which keeps a lot of one and two-bed flats turning over among people who would rather not own a car for the commute. Those moves land mid-week and mid-month more often than not, which is the cheapest and calmest time to be doing it.
Getting a van to your door in Whitley Bay
- The Esplanade and The LinksHouses sit back behind the promenade and the grass, so thirty or forty metres of carry happen before the first step, into whatever the sea is throwing at you. The Esplanade streets are permit zone WB7.
- Upper Tyneside flats between Whitley Road and the Metro lineThe stairs start immediately behind the front door and turn near the top, so wardrobes, corner sofas and sprung mattresses generally come apart on the landing rather than at the van.
- Park View, Whitley Road and South ParadeLoading restrictions and shoppers from mid-morning onward. A flat above one of these shops is an early load, and the start time goes in the quote rather than being argued about at eleven.
- Monkseaton Front StreetConservation-area village core with on-street parking only and no off-street space at most addresses, so the van sits on the road and the walk is whatever the road gives us.
- Simpson Street and the Cullercoats harbour streetsOld fishermen's cottages on tight streets dropping towards the bay, with small door openings and turns that anything long has to be walked round in stages.
When we are the wrong call
If a mate rang me about moving a one-bed flat on Marine Avenue into another one-bed three streets over, I would tell him not to book a removals firm at all. Hire a Transit for the Saturday, round up two people who owe you a favour, do it in three runs and buy them a curry afterwards. That comes in under anything a crew can charge you and you will be finished by teatime. Same answer for a student room, a garage clear-out, or anything you could carry down yourself in an afternoon without hating it by four o'clock. Where a crew starts paying for itself is when the timing belongs to somebody else. Keys landing at an hour you do not control. A house that has to be empty before the buyers turn up. Three flights and a turn at the top with nobody spare to hold the door open.
Getting in and out of Whitley Bay
Whitley Bay hangs off the end of the A191, so a long run starts the same way whatever the destination: inland through Shiremoor onto the A19, then south. Durham is about 27 miles that way, Leeds roughly 105, Manchester around 155 and London close to 290. Where the route goes under the river the Tyne Tunnel toll applies, £2.60 for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and £5.20 above that since 1 May 2026, and it sits inside the quoted figure. Long runs are priced as one number with the fuel already in it, so an hour lost at Ferrybridge is our problem rather than a line on your invoice. The long-distance bands sit with the rest of the pricing. Whoever loads at this end unloads at the other.
Questions people in Whitley Bay ask
What do you need from me to book online?
Collection and delivery postcodes, bedroom count, your date, and a description of the access at both ends. The deposit is 30% and it comes off the final bill. The access description is the part that moves the price, so if you are in an upper flat say so, say how many flights, and say whether the stairs turn. A photograph of the front door and the landing beats a paragraph every time.
My street is permit only. Who sorts the parking out?
You apply and we tell you what to apply for. North Tyneside Council will suspend a bay for a domestic removal at £10 per day per bay, a standard bay being 5.5 metres, and the application has to be in at least five working days ahead. Wait for approval before you pay anything. Permits are tied to their own zone, so a neighbour's spare from the next zone along will not cover the van, and we cannot reserve road space on your behalf.
Why do you want to know my three biggest items?
Those are the ones that decide whether the day runs to plan. In an upper Tyneside flat the staircase is narrow and turns near the top, and a three-door wardrobe, a corner sofa or a sprung king mattress will not go down assembled. Knowing beforehand means the right tools are in the van and the dismantling is inside the quote instead of arriving as a surprise at half eight.
Is it dearer because we are on the coast?
No. The price list is the same in Whitley Bay as it is in Durham, and there is no coastal surcharge sitting on top of it. Tolls are our cost rather than yours: the Tyne Tunnel went to £2.60 for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes and £5.20 above that on 1 May 2026, and where a job crosses under the river that sits inside the agreed figure. Nothing is added afterwards, either.
How far ahead should I book for the summer?
For July and August, further ahead than feels sensible. Moves into the Whitley Bay High and Monkseaton school catchments cluster in the holidays, and the Friday and month-end dates in that window go first and carry the 15% peak uplift on labour besides. April is not early for an August Friday. A mid-week date in the same week is usually both available and cheaper.
