House Removals in South Shields

House removals and man & van in South Shields — our own crew, our own vans, and a fixed price before anyone lifts anything.

Durham-based, trading since 2008South Shields moves every weekFixed prices from £210

South Shields was built outward from the river in bands, and the band you live in decides the day. Nearest the water, through Laygate and Tyne Dock, it is 1880s terrace, much of it Tyneside flats: two front doors under one brick arch, one opening on a hallway and the other on a staircase going straight up. Inland it turns into council-built semis at Whiteleas, Biddick Hall and Cleadon Park, front paths and gates. Up at Westoe and on the Lawe Top it is Georgian and Victorian, on streets laid out long before anyone had to reverse a 3.5-tonne Luton out of one.

Three different jobs. On the terrace the staircase decides what comes apart. On the estates the door is easy and the walk is long. At Westoe the question is where the van turns.

We work out of Durham, 20 miles down the A19 and the A194. Our own crew, never subcontractors. One written figure before the day, and the total does not grow at the end.

Getting across the Tyne, and what it costs

The town sits at the mouth of the river, so a lot of moves out of here have a crossing in them. The Tyne Tunnel toll went up on 1 May 2026. It is now £2.60 a crossing for anything under 3.5 tonnes, £5.20 over, and you pay it in both directions. The Shields Ferry is no help: foot passengers and bikes, no vehicles. The way round is the A19 or a run through Newcastle, which on a weekday morning costs more in time than the tunnel costs in money.

There is no clean air charge and no congestion charge in South Shields. Newcastle and Gateshead run a Clean Air Zone, but it is across the water, it does not touch privately owned cars, and it only enters a move that ends in one of those two centres. Tolls and charges go into our figure before you agree it.

Everything else is the A19 and the A194. The Metro Yellow line terminates here, and a lot of the local work is people moving nearer a station or nearer South Tyneside District Hospital on Harton Lane.

Two doors, one staircase

If yours is the upper of the two flats, that staircase is the job. Narrow, a turn near the top, no lift. Three-door wardrobes come apart. Corner sofas come apart. A king divan goes down on its edge, or it does not go down. Tell us at quote stage which door is yours and what your three biggest items are. That answer moves the price further than the mileage does. A flight of stairs adds a charge at whichever end of the job it sits, from £25 on a one-bed to £105 on a four-bed. An upper flat is one flight.

Behind the terrace is a yard and a back lane. Some of the Laygate lanes work and we use them. On others the bins are out, a car sits halfway down, and a gatepost stops the tail lift, so we load off the front street. Street by street, not a rule.

The estates are the opposite problem. Whiteleas, Biddick Hall and Cleadon Park load off a front path in minutes, then it is fifty metres back to the van, all day. Westoe Crown Village went up on the colliery site after it shut in 1993, so the doors are generous and the closes are not. A loaded Luton comes back out of those in reverse.

What it costs here

A three-bedroom move inside South Shields is £550, agreed in writing beforehand. Same list everywhere we go. No Shields surcharge. Other sizes, hourly rates, packing, pianos and dismantling sit on the North East removal cost guide.

Two things move a Shields quote, and neither is how much furniture you own. Stairs, covered above. And the date. A Friday, a Saturday or a month-end completion carries an uplift on the labour, Sunday more again, because that is when everybody completes. A Tuesday mid-month is the cheapest day to move in this town and the easiest one to park on.

Part-day work goes by the hour, two-hour minimum. Blankets and straps ride in the van. The deposit is 30% and comes off the final bill. 0191 743 2754.

Where the van can legally stand

Permit schemes here are the exception. South Tyneside Council runs resident parking on the Foreshore and in the town centre. A permit covers only the streets printed on it and does not transfer between schemes. It is £50 the first year, £20 to renew. Visitor permits come in books of 25 for £10, one vehicle for one day.

Westoe nearly joined that list. The council consulted in 2025 on a Controlled Parking Zone covering Imeary Street, East Stainton Street, Ada Street, Wood Terrace, Westoe Village and their neighbours. Residents said no. 55.38% expected it to make the area worse against 30.77% who expected it to help. The consultation closed on 2 June 2025. Those streets stay first come, first served, which is fine at seven in the morning and less fine at four.

What we cannot tell you from Durham is the hours on your own street, because they differ by scheme. The parking team on 0191 424 7900 has that in a minute. If a bay wants suspending, ask on the day your date firms up. Not the week of the move.

Sunday 13 September

The Great North Run finishes in South Shields, and in 2026 it falls on Sunday 13 September. The seafront and the main approach shut with it: the A183 Coast Road, Bents Park Road, and Prince Edward Road and Redwell Lane along the A1300. Some of it closes in the small hours and reopens in the evening. We would not take a seafront or Harton completion that day, and the streets either side are slow all morning. South Tyneside publishes the closures and times each year. Read it before you agree the date.

The rest of the year is ordinary. Month-end and the school holidays are busy, the last Friday of a month is the worst of them, and nobody has ever explained to us why August is quieter here than July.

Getting a van to your door in South Shields

  • Westoe VillageVehicles get in and out by St George's Avenue and nothing else. There is no through route, so a badly parked car on the way in is a problem with no second option.
  • The Lawe Top and the ForeshoreHigh ground above the river mouth, tight Victorian streets, and resident permit parking on the seafront side, so the legal stopping place is often well back from the door.
  • Laygate and Tyne DockDense Tyneside flat terraces with nothing off-street. Whether the back lane takes a Luton with the tail lift down is answered lane by lane, and we look before we promise it.
  • King Street and the Market PlacePedestrianised, so a flat above a shop gets loaded outside the restricted hours and carried, rather than dropped at the door.
  • Ocean RoadRestaurant deliveries have the kerb from mid-morning, so anything loading along here starts early or waits.
  • Bents Park Road and the A183 Coast RoadClosed for the Great North Run finish every September along with Prince Edward Road and Redwell Lane, which rules out a seafront move on that Sunday.

When we are the wrong call

What decides this is the clock. A single room going out of a shared house on Dean Road in June, three streets down the road, with nobody waiting on the keys, does not need a crew and a Luton. Borrow a van, get two mates, run it three times, spend the difference on a takeaway. It reads differently when the day itself is fixed. Completion money moving at noon, an upper flat to empty and a three-bed at Cleadon Park to fill before dark, a solicitor who will not extend anything. Miss that window and the bill is a hotel night, a second van hire and a fortnight of phone calls. That number is bigger than ours.

Getting in and out of South Shields

The road south out of South Shields runs down the A194 to Whitemare Pool, onto the A194(M) and into the A1(M). That is how every long-distance job leaves, whether it is Leeds at about 105 miles, Manchester at about 155 or London at roughly 290. Long runs go out at a single fixed figure with the fuel counted in already, so a bad afternoon on the A1(M) lands on us rather than on your invoice. The long-distance bands sit on the cost guide. The crew that loads in Shields is the crew that unloads at the other end. Coming the other way, Durham is about 20 miles back up the A19, which is why South Shields is a normal week here rather than a special trip.

Questions people in South Shields ask

Is my street permit-controlled?

Most South Shields streets are not. South Tyneside Council runs resident schemes in places including the Foreshore and the town centre, and a permit only covers the streets printed on it, with no transfer to another scheme. A resident permit is £50 in the first year and £20 to renew, and visitor permits come in books of 25 for £10, each good for one vehicle for one day. The parking team on 0191 424 7900 will confirm what applies at your address, and that is also the number for suspending a bay.

Who pays the Tyne Tunnel toll?

We do, and it is inside the figure you agree, so it does not turn up afterwards. The rates changed on 1 May 2026: £5.20 a crossing above 3.5 tonnes, £2.60 below it, each way. The Shields Ferry does not take vehicles, so a cross-river job is the tunnel or the long way round by the A19.

Can we move on Great North Run day?

Not at a seafront or Harton address. The 2026 run is Sunday 13 September and it finishes in South Shields, with the A183 Coast Road, Bents Park Road, Prince Edward Road and Redwell Lane closed for a good part of the day. Inland at Whiteleas or Boldon it is workable but slow. South Tyneside Council publishes the exact closures and times, and it is worth reading before you commit to a completion date that week.

What do you need to know before you can put a fixed price on it?

Both addresses, the date, the number of bedrooms, which floor at each end and your three biggest items. In South Shields we will also ask which of the two front doors is yours, because an upper Tyneside flat means a charged flight of stairs and usually a wardrobe that comes apart on the landing. Photographs of the door and the street tell us more than anything you can describe on the phone.

We are going from South Shields to North Shields. Local or long distance?

Local. It is a short hop across the water and a tunnel crossing by road, priced as a local move with the toll in it both ways. What is worth planning is the running order of the day, because the tunnel backs up into the evening and you do not want the second half of the load sitting in it at five.

Can you pack for us as well?

Yes, with boxes, paper and tape included in the packing price, charged by property size. The bands are on the removal cost guide. Packing a three-bed properly takes the best part of a day, so it gets booked for the day before the move rather than the morning of it.
