Student removals in Durham: what a room move costs

One room, one van, two hours. Book a Durham student move by the hour, not by the house, and work out the housemate split before anyone pays a deposit.

11 min readUpdated 11 August 2026By the Great House Move crew

For one student room in Durham, book a man and van by the hour, not a house removal. Student removals in Durham start at £45 an hour for one man and a Luton van, with a two-hour minimum. That is £90, and the first ten miles are included, which in Durham means all of them.

That is the cheaper answer and it is the true one. Nearly every student who overspends in this city does it by buying a whole-house product for one room. What follows is everything else: when Durham moves, how housemates split a bill without paying more than they need to, and which streets cost you an hour.

Book by the hour, not by the house

A house removal is priced by the property. A whole household's furniture, a crew of two or three, most of a day. Right product for a family leaving a three-bed in Belmont. Wrong one for a room with a desk and eleven boxes in it. If you have reached the stage of moving a real household, the full North East tariff sets out those fixed prices in full.

For a room, you want the hourly product. One man and a Luton van is £45 an hour with a two-hour minimum, and the first ten miles are included. The Viaduct to Neville's Cross is about a mile. Gilesgate to the Science Site is under two. Mileage will not appear on a Durham student bill.

The two-hour minimum governs everything else on this page. £90 is the floor for one room no matter how little you own. You cannot buy forty minutes of van. Every decision below is a decision about how many times you pay that minimum.

Peak dates carry an uplift on the labour rate, and Sundays more so, which matters here because the whole city changes over inside the same week. Colleges hand rooms back on 26 June and private tenancies start on 1 July. The practical point is simpler than the percentage: if your new tenancy lets you take 2 or 3 July instead, take it. Same job, cheaper, and you get the slot you asked for rather than whatever is left.

Durham moves three times a year, and one of them is brutal

Most university cities have one student moving season. Durham has three, because the collegiate system and the private rental market run on completely different calendars and they only overlap for about a week.

Late June: seventeen colleges empty at once

New undergraduate accommodation offers cover a 39-week period running 26 September to 26 June, and Easter term in 2026/27 ends on 25 June 2027. Teaching stops, and the day after, the colleges are handing rooms back on the same schedule. St Chad's and St John's run their own residence agreements and can differ by a few days, and Ustinov is postgraduate-only. Check your own college contract rather than assuming the 26th. Either way, vans in Durham are booked solid that week and it is not close.

1 July. The private houses all change hands

Durham City student houses are commonly let on a whole-house basis for twelve months from 1 July. Not by the room, not by the term. The whole house, the whole year. Four to six people move out of one address and four to six move in, often inside 48 hours, on streets where two vans cannot pass each other.

Late September: arrivals

Induction week for 2026 runs Monday 28 September to Sunday 4 October, with Michaelmas teaching starting on 5 October. Arrivals spread across a weekend and most happen in a parent's car, so this is by far the gentlest of the three crunches.

What one student room amounts to

People consistently overestimate their own room, then book a full crew to move something one man could have carried in a single trip. If you are not sure which side of that line you fall on, the van size guide works through what fits in what. For a Durham room, second year onwards, the inventory is usually this:

  • 8 to 12 medium boxes or crates: clothes, kitchen kit, folders, the shoebox of chargers
  • Bedding, duvet and pillows, usually in two bin bags because nobody buys a vacuum bag in June
  • A desk chair, a clothes airer, a mirror, a bin, a lamp
  • A mini fridge or a microwave in about half of shared houses
  • One or two flat-pack shelf units that were built inside the room and will not fit back through the door assembled
  • A TV, a printer, a guitar or a bike in roughly one room in three

Books break every estimate. A large box of books is a two-person lift and it will split at the bottom on the stairs. Small boxes only, half-filled and topped with something light. The rest of the technique is in how to pack boxes properly.

Bikes: front wheel off, and load the bike last so it comes out first. Shelving: take it apart the night before, or pay a crew £45 an hour to do it with a kitchen screwdriver.

Splitting the cost with housemates, and when not to

Read this part twice, because the intuitive answer is usually the expensive one. Sharing is not automatically cheaper. It depends entirely on how many addresses the van has to stop at.

Four of you, four different destinations

Book separately. Four individual bookings at £45 an hour, each hitting the two-hour minimum, is £90 each and £360 between the four of you. Now put all four in one van instead: it calls at four pickups and four drop-offs, there is a charge for every extra address, and the clock keeps running while it crawls across town between them. You end up above £360, it eats the whole day, and the last person out gets home at nine.

Four of you, one new house

Now sharing wins, and it is not close. Four separate bookings means paying that two-hour minimum four times over (£360) for four versions of the same journey. One booking with a bigger crew pays the minimum once, then pays only for the hours actually worked, and four student rooms is one load rather than four half-empty vans. One address at each end, one afternoon, done. This is the version of pooling that reliably saves money, and it is the one most Durham shared houses actually have on 1 July.

One of you going a long way home

Finals finish and everything goes back to London. That is not an hourly job. Being charged by the hour to sit on the A1 is a bad deal for both of us. It is a fixed-price route with the fuel already in it. The Durham to London run is costed out properly here. Split three ways with housemates heading the same direction, it makes sense. On your own it usually does not: a student room's contents are rarely worth what the transport costs. Sell the desk in the college Facebook group, keep the clothes, post the books.

The question to ask before anybody books anything is not "how many of us are there?" It is "how many addresses does the van have to stop at?" That is what decides whether pooling saves you money or costs you a day.

Moving out and moving in on the same day

On 1 July a lot of Durham houses empty and refill within hours. One group has to be out, another wants in, and neither has any claim on the other's timing. The agent just has two contracts stopping and starting on one doorstep.

Take the earliest slot of the day. Not because a crew is quicker at eight in the morning, but because everything downstream of you is queued behind whoever goes first: the check-out, the clean, the incoming group's van, the agent's afternoon. The last booking on 1 July finishes in the dark.

What does not work is agreeing "we'll be out by lunchtime" over WhatsApp and calling that a plan. Neither of you controls the key. Get the release time from the agent in writing and build the day backwards from it. The moving day timeline sets out how the hours run, including what happens to a crew when keys are late. Agents release keys when the check-in inspection is done, not at the time on the email, and "sometime after two" regularly means four. Get the key in your hand before the van leaves the old address.

Where a Durham move loses an hour

Durham's student housing sits in Victorian terraces. The Viaduct, Crossgate, Allergate, Claypath, Gilesgate, Neville's Cross, the streets off Elvet. Narrow, on-street parking only, no driveways, and a top room that is usually a converted attic. None of it is a problem if you plan for it, and all of it costs money if you do not, because what you are buying is time.

Parking is the big one

The Durham City Controlled Parking Zone requires a permit between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Sunday including bank holidays. The only exceptions are Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. Residents can apply to have permit-holder-only regulations suspended during a removal, but the application has to go in ahead of time, through The Parking Shop on 0191 384 6633. The separate Controlled Parking Areas, which take in Gilesgate/St Giles Close and Framwellgate Moor as well as Chester-le-Street and Bishop Auckland, also require the application in advance. The council allows up to five working days to process a permit application, so treat a week as the minimum lead time.

Do that yourself, in your own name or your landlord's. We cannot apply on your behalf, and a penalty charge notice on a removal van finds its way onto your bill one way or another. If a suspension is not possible, say so at booking, so we send a crew that expects a carry. On the tighter terraces the van parks at the end of the street and everything walks: sixty metres each way, forty times, is most of an extra hour on a two-hour job. Have everything boxed and stacked by the front door before the crew arrives. Nothing else you do shortens a move as much.

Stairs, and the mattress problem

The attic room in a Viaduct or Crossgate house is two flights above the pavement and the staircase turns twice on the way. Flights without a lift are charged at each end, alongside the other extras on the live price list, but the bigger cost is time. Blocks with a lift add nothing, but on 1 July there is a queue for it. Book it with the building manager.

The thing that stops a move is a double mattress in an attic room with a turn in the stairs. It went up on its edge when the room was let and it comes down the same way. Strip it, lift the landing door off its hinges if the turn is tight, and put two people on it. Every year somebody attempts it alone at half four and leaves a gouge in the plaster, which comes out of the deposit. The end-of-tenancy guide covers what damage gets charged for.

The five days between the college and the house

College accommodation runs to 26 June. Private tenancies start 1 July. That is five days where your possessions have nowhere they are legally allowed to be, and nobody warns you until the week itself. Four ways round it, in the order we would try them:

  1. Ask the incoming landlord or agent for early access for boxes only. A surprising number say yes for a few days if the previous tenants are out and the clean is done. Ask in May, not on the 25th of June.
  2. Ask a housemate whose tenancy already covers late June. Someone in the group usually has one, and a spare floor for five days is a cheaper favour than anything else here.
  3. Take a self-storage unit for the week and let us run the two legs. Your room to the unit when the college contract ends, the unit to the house on the 1st. Both normally sit inside the two-hour minimum, so around £180 of van in total on a standard weekday rate, plus whatever the unit costs. Check the day of the week before you budget it: college hand-back sometimes lands on a Saturday, which carries the peak uplift.
  4. Take it home and bring it back. Only worth it if home is close and someone is driving anyway.

We do not sell storage, and we are not going to pretend otherwise to keep the job in-house. There is no warehouse behind this. We are a removals firm from Durham with our own crew and a 3.5-tonne Luton, and a van sitting loaded for five days is a bad idea. If somebody offers to keep your things in their van over the changeover, ask where it will be parked and who is insured.

Booking it, and when we are the wrong call

For the summer changeover, three to four weeks out is the real lead time. The last week of June and the first week of July fill before anything else in our year. If you are moving into a first proper tenancy rather than another student house, the 8-week moving checklist covers the admin a room move never involved.

Now the part most removal firms leave out. If everything you own fits in a car boot over two trips and a housemate has a Corsa, do not book a van. Two runs and a tank of petrol beats £90 and you know it. Same if you are a first year arriving in October with a family car already loaded. Your parents are the removal firm that day. We earn our money when there is furniture, when a tenancy has put a deadline on the hour, when nobody in the house drives, or when the thing coming down two flights of Victorian stairs is a double mattress and there are two of you on it.

When you do book, have these to hand and the price will be right first time:

  • Both full postcodes, not "near the Viaduct"
  • The floor at each end, and whether there is a lift
  • Whether a bed, desk or wardrobe needs dismantling and rebuilding
  • The time the keys are released, not the time you were promised
  • How many of you will be there to carry. It changes which crew we send and what you pay

Then book your student move online and see the price before you commit. A fixed number on the spot, and a 30% deposit holds the date and comes off the final bill.

Questions people ask

How much does a man and van cost for a student move in Durham?

£45 an hour for one man and a Luton van, with a two-hour minimum, so £90 is the realistic floor for a single room. The first ten miles are included and virtually every move inside Durham is well under that, so mileage rarely appears on a student bill. Bigger crews are charged by the hour too, and the full rate card sits on our North East cost page.

Do I actually need a removal firm for one student room?

Often not. If your things fit in a car boot over two trips and someone in the house drives, that beats any van. Book one when there is furniture to carry, when the tenancy pins you to a fixed handover time, or when the room is two flights up and the mattress is a double.

Is it cheaper to split a van with my housemates?

Only if you are all going to the same new address. Four separate bookings each hit the two-hour minimum (£90 each, £360 between four) whereas one shared booking to one destination pays that minimum once and carries four rooms in a single load. Four different destinations is the opposite: extra-address charges and the clock running between them push a shared van past £360 and cost you the day.

Which dates are worst for a student move in Durham?

26 June to 1 July, and the last weekend of June above all. College accommodation contracts run to 26 June, most private student tenancies start 1 July, and everything in the city has to move inside those five days. Moving on 2 or 3 July is the same job on a quieter, cheaper day.

What do I do if my college room ends before my new house starts?

Ask the incoming agent for early access for boxes only, or ask a housemate whose tenancy already covers late June. If neither works, take a self-storage unit for the week and we will run both legs. Your room to the unit, then the unit to the house. Both usually sit inside the two-hour minimum, so £180 of van in total.

Do students pay council tax in Durham?

Households where everyone is a full-time student do not pay council tax, per GOV.UK. You still have to tell Durham County Council and supply certificates from the university. In a private house the exemption is not automatic, only in university halls. If a housemate has graduated or gone part-time, the house loses full exemption.

Can a removal van park outside my house in Durham city centre?

Inside the Durham City Controlled Parking Zone a permit is needed from 8am to 6pm every day, bank holidays included. Residents can apply to have permit-holder-only regulations suspended for a removal, but it must be arranged in advance through The Parking Shop on 0191 384 6633, and the Controlled Parking Areas ask for up to five working days.

Do you store student belongings over the summer?

No. We do removals, packing and long-distance runs: storage is not something we sell, and saying so costs you less than us improvising a workaround. Take a self-storage unit for the changeover week and we will run both legs.
